2010 Plainfield District Deficit Job Cuts sign now

Dear fellow community members of the Plainfield School District 202:

On the 25th of January, 2010, the Plainfield Community Consolidated School District School Board of Education will be discussing their plans for the "Budget Deficit Elimination Strategy" planned for the 2009-2010 district debts. These cuts will include and will not be limited to the many beloved after-school activities and clubs and, more importantly, our district's hardest workers: our teachers and staff at our school buildings.

The Board of Education's plan includes a strategy to "both cutting costs and increasing revenues to create a sustainable budget". They are using a system called the "Pyramid of Savings" in order to delineate their claim and process of thought for the budget cuts. In this mode of thought, the Board of Education hopes to reduce the impact of students in this deficit cut by exhausting the positions of the teachers and administrators of the school district. The Board believes that this way, the student education experience will not be hindered in any severe manner. However, their belief is twisted and wrong. Not only is firing teachers and cutting clubs a danger to our high school experience, it will sever the ties between school commitment and the foundation of a community that brings our district to unity.

Last year, a total of 86 teachers and administrators were removed from their positions to relieve the district of the deficit. Although these cuts allowed $5 million dollars to be saved by the district, it greatly hurt our community. Our hearts were torn to have such great teachers and role models fired only for financial gain. Our district was one set apart: a district based off quality, not quantity. If that was even upheld as a theory now, the Board has broken it apart. The quality of teachers means nothing when money can be spared. Nothing at all.

The Plainfield School District 202 is supposedly the district that" [prepares] learners for the future", but with so many teachers that fear losing their jobs and the loss of many clubs that tie us together, what kind of future does the Board envision for us? A bleak future of numbers to prevent deficit? Dr. John Harper, do you believe that our district should be handled like data? I don't.

Please sign this petition in order to maintain the community our district has worked years to establish. Don't allow this deficit plan to slip your minds, because it will affect our families and our friends, our teachers and our students. Lastly, it will affect our futures, and the futures of our peers, young and old. Please make a difference.

If we get as many signatures as possible for this petition, the district Board will understand that a deficit cut is ridiculous and will understand how tearing the situation may become if they are to follow through! Please help the district and all who believe in community and opportunity!
