D1NZ Press Release:

D1NZ Grand Final date/venue dilemma

Over the past 12 months D1NZ has been working with Counties Racing/Pukekohe Park Raceway and the Auckland Council to try and secure on-going access to the venue after the council served an Abatement Notice because of smoke crossing the perimeter fence at a 2011 D1NZ event.

In that time D1NZ has spent considerable time and resources talking to residents and council and has got all residents bar one within 450m of the drift section to sign a declaration stating that they have no issue with drifting at the track. This includes the major businesses backing onto the racetrack.

Pukekohe Park was to host the final round of the 2012/13 Cody's D1NZ National Drifting Championship sometime in April this year, the month designated as 'motorsport month' by the promoters of the V8 Supercar round.

With no firm commitment from Council re the Abatement Notice, D1NZ also booked Hampton Downs as an alternative venue for the Grand Final event.

At a meeting at the Cody's D1NZ Round 5 at Christchurch over the Easter weekend, however, the D1NZ drivers discussed the situation and rather than accept the alternative of a round at Hampton Downs - which hosted the fourth round of the series just over a month ago - voted to fight to retain the right to have the event at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

The track has what is regarded as the fastest drifting corner in the world and because drift events have been held at the track for the past 10 years series organiser Brendon White says that the drivers vote underlines just how important - both to the Cody's D1NZ series and the sport as a whole - a round at Pukekohe Park Raceway is.

He also believes that the sport has the numbers on its side.

"We've done the hard yards, we've talked to all the parties involved and despite 10 months of going back and fourth with the council we have definitely not given up as it seems that a huge majority (near 99%) of the residents and businesses of Pukekohe support the economic benefits the series brings to the region."

"We've even gone to Mayor Len Brown on this and indicated to him how strongly we feel."

White also says that with the millions of dollars spent on upgrading both the track and the venue facilities for the V8 Supercars which are only going to use the track once a year it simply doesn't make sense to exclude other users - particularly ones like D1NZ which have a large and ever-growing fan base that currently exceeds any other motorsport growth in NZ.

To that end D1NZ has prepared a strong case which will be presented at an independent noise management forum made up of Auckland Council members, residents, business owners and representatives from the track which meets on April 22 2013.

D1NZ is also seeking support from fans and members of the general public to show their support for drifting to continue at the track.

If D1NZ is successful in getting Auckland Council to reconsider the Abatement Notice White says they will look at running the Grand Final at Pukekohe Park Raceway in June over a Friday and Saturday event.

If not the drivers have indicated that Taupo's Ricoh Motorsport Park is their favoured venue.
