Ireland Wake Up & See The Stripes (Aimee Foley) sign now

Ireland Wake Up & See The Stripes was established in May 2013.

The original name derives from the fact that Ireland does not recognise Ehlers Danlos Syndrome as the serious medical condition that it is.  'See The Stripes' dervies from a medical term used to describe rare illness.  "When a Doctor hears horses hooves, he expects to see a horse not a zebra".  The zebra is the international symbol for EDS.  Hence, Ireland Wake Up & See The Stripes.

Aimee Foley, a 26 year old Midleton woman created the campaign page after been officially diagnosed with the genetic condition known as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type III after 6 years of illness.

Having discussed her options with the specialist in London & discovering the difficulty in obtaining TAS(Treatment Abroad Scheme) funding for her treatment in London, she decided that she was not going to be another 'statistic' & began her journey that would be life with EDS in Ireland.

Aimee has publically spoken out about Ehlers Danlos Syndromethrough the media & her online vidoe diaries & recent documentary 'Aimee's Journey & has actively approached the Irish Government in particular An Taoiseach Enda Kenny & Minister for Health James O'Reilly.  Aimee & her supportive Mother Deirdre O Leary have teamed up to encourage the Irish Government & the HSE to revisit the TAS policies in the hope of making trips to London for EDS treatment more available.

Both Aimee & her Mother Deirdre have appeared in numerous publications since May 2013 including The East Cork Journal, The Evening Echo, & The Sun.  They also appeared on Tv3's Ireland AM on August 8th to discuss Aimee's condition as well as to highlight the difficulties they have experienced with the TAS to date.

Aimee is a very unwell young woman & strives to maintain the best quality of life she can, as well as campaigning for change in Ireland.

It has become a nationally recognised campaign that has gone viral since the campaign went live just over 3 months ago.

Aimee, her Mother Deirdre, & Fiance Steve although they are helping Aimee to stand up for the rights of EDS in Ireland, are primarily focused on obtaining the funds for Aimee's vital treatment in London.

Fundraising has commenced in order to allow Aimee access the services she desperately needs.

The Campaign:

The aim of this page to positively & honestly & actively raise awareness of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in the hope that the Irish Government & HSE begin to take into account the seriousness of this condition & begin providing necessary services & facilities to patients in their own country.  It is too much to expect Aimee to have to travel abroad for treatment with a condition like EDS.

NB:It is important to note that Ireland Wake Up & See The Stripes is NOT a support site nor support forum.  This page is to primarily raise awareness through the life of Aimee Foley & her family & their journey with EDS in Ireland & their motivation to change the TAS policy in Ireland.
