Manifesto #5 - Premier League & FA jointly accountable for national sides

Congratulations!

You have just taken a step onto the pitch to help England win their first major trophy in decades. I created this around the England V Holland Game 29/02/2012, but I have not mentioned it to anyone yet. I was unsure about initiating this campaign and not having enough time to get it right. I keep waiting for someone else to do something about the disastrous football governance in Britain but nothing ever happens - it's awful!

'Meanwhile football, together with the rest of the world, is changing', (said George Orwell, or something like that, anyway). And like everything else it can change only in certain directions, which up to a point can be foreseen. That is not to say that the future is fixed, merely that certain alternatives are possible and others not. A seed may grow or not grow, but at any rate a turnip seed never grows into a parsnip. It is therefore of the deepest importance to try and determine what football as a cultural phenomenon is, before guessing what part football can play in the events that are happening.

To that end, the dysfunctional politics between The Premier League and The FA has to stop – today. Look at the state we're In. This club v country issue is pivotal to everything that is currently wrong with our game. It should be club and country - not club v country. People who tell you that it is not possible to have a strong Premier League and strong national team are really only interested in maintaining their status and personal rewards. The current business models and market segmentation effect is eroding the value of football and ignoring a lot of heritage 'customers' - people and fans who deserve better.). Sign this petition. Ask your friends to do the same. Forward this to everyone you know. If we can get some momentum behind this it will be interesting to see how this game plays out.

Why would anyone not interested in football be interested in signing this petition, you might ask…? I have many friends who don't like football, either, but they do believe in a cohesive society and reward being relative to performance. The saturation coverage and highly overvalued wage structure is bringing the game into disrepute. I think many of these players would play for 25% of what they currently earn and many people who pay for them by TV subscriptions that continue to spiral up would be better off as a result.

'This year it's going to be bigger and better!' cries the marketing campaigns for pay TV football. And you, dear pay TV subscriber, are going to increasingly be poorer for it now and more so in future. TV money and overseas investment – and I use that term loosely given the perilous debt that some clubs now have - is damaging any sensible and sustainable approach to football.

Football in Britain is broken. How can we fix it? Well..., we can fix it together. Individually it is difficult to imagine how to effect change, but together - we can do it!
