Traveller Sites in Brayton North Yorkshire - Where is the consultation with the existing community? sign now

Further to the following Selby District Council document:

http://selby.limehouse.co.uk/portal/planning/sadpd_i_and_o/sadpd__io?pointId=1294231228896

This document details seemingly well advanced plans by Selby District Council (SDC) / Brayton Parish Council (BPC) regarding the allocation of land immediately adjacent to the village of Brayton for the purposes of extended Traveller camps.

This petition is not an attempt to blindly block these plans. Rather a genuine effort to make SDC/BPC understand that they represent each and every member of the current community. As such they should not proceed with these plans without full, open and honest consultation with the existing population of Brayton.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that these plans have not been widely publicised, as an example of this no literature has been distributed to Brayton homes (as has been in Riccall and Barbly). Unconfirmed reports suggest that those who have access to the community notice boards have been asked to not display details of these proposals prominently. BPC has made a small announcement in the “Latest News” section of its website (http://www.braytonparishcouncil.co.uk/), however at the time of writing this page had only received 5205 visits since its inception a number of years ago. Not a single Brayton resident I have spoken to was aware of these plans. As mentioned this is anecdotal and somewhat subjective, therefore this petition leaves the reader to decide the importance, relevance and applicability of these “facts” and the apparent attempts to cloak these proposals.

In this day and age it is all too easy to skirt around reality and accuse these types of petitions of “racism”. This is absolutely not about race or intolerance rather the bigger picture. Each and every member of the Brayton community has made an investment in this community and we all want that investment to bear fruit. We all want a cohesive, vibrant and functionality community with the necessary amenities to support our needs, schools, doctors, dentistry etc. The driving factor here is not one of race or intolerance but one of investment.

Putting the potential for house devaluations aside, do Brayton schools have capacity to accept additional pupils? Do local doctors /dentists have capacity for additional patient registrations? Does Brayton have sufficient amenities to support the leisure activities of an increased population? These are important questions that cannot go without answers, this is not about race this is about our community, the people who make it and its future.

The goal of this petition is 1000 signatures, this represents one fifth of the Brayton electorate.
