Help us save the Network Resource Centre

As representatives of the SHOUT (Supported Housing and Outreach service user Group) at Network for Change, and of the Network Resource Centre Steering Group, we are writing to ask you to sign our petition against the closure of the Network Resource Centre in September 2011. The Centre has been running for almost 6 years and provides a vital service and lifeline to 120 vulnerable people with long-term and serious mental health problems. Most years the Centre has been funded by charitable grants only and we feel it needs to be funded by local health or social services money as it meets a gap in local provision for those most in need. Many of those who use the Centre will have nowhere else to go (Day hospitals closed in 2008 and were not replaced with extra community day service provision and there has been no funding for Drop-ins or peer support services which were also promised in 2008). People will be left at risk of relapse, crisis, going back into hospital or worse (are feeling suicidal).

Network for Change who run the Centre, which takes many referrals from Health and social services, as well as self referrals, listens to service users and runs the kind of services we want. Network has also won national and regional awards for good quality mental health services. Commissioners and Health and social services say they listen to service users, but in this case they have so far not been listening and have not given funding for a service we need where we can access a range of help, advice and support and meet friends so we are less isolated and able to cope better. Without the Centre the mental health of many service users will get worse. We understand that this Government has made cuts to health and social care services, but this service could be funded as an early intervention and prevention service – stopping people getting unwell and having to go into hospital again. Some people may be able to pay for the service through Personalisation, but very few people with mental health problems have these budgets so far and the Centre will need other monies and the promise of some definite funding very soon if it is to stay open.

Please support us by signing our petition – we need as many signatures as possible.

Thank you

Viv and Janet
