Reduce the routine breast screening (mammogram) age to 40 sign now

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Statistics on the Cancer Research UK website (from 2008, the most up to date data) show that significant numbers of women between the age of 40 to 50 are being diagnosed with breast cancer each year. Therefore I feel that the routine beast screening service, used to diagnose breast cancer in women who do not have any symptoms of the disease, should be offered to women from age 40.

Breast cancer affects thousands of lives each year, with 12,116 people dying from the disease in the UK in 2008 (Cancer Research UK). This breast screening (mammogram) service is vital for diagnosing breast cancer in women who show no signs of the disease, because it is able to spot the very early stages of cancer in the breast tissue. Therefore if this service was given to women from the age of 40, breast cancer would be diagnosed in many more women much faster, and at a stage where the cancer can easily be treated and prevented from spreading to other areas of the body. This in turn will enable increasing numbers of women to survive breast cancer each year.

I am very passionate about this because last year, a close family friend was diagnosed with breast cancer, and this was a massive wake up call to me that anybody can get cancer at any time. It also made me realise how important it is to do what you can to help eradicate cancer once and for all, because it affects almost everybody, directly or indirectly. This is also close to my heart because I wish to pursue a career in cancer research once I have finished my degree. But until I have reached that point in my life, I want to do what I can to help prevent/ cure cancer once and for all.

I truly believe that reducing the routine breast screening age to 40 will save thousands of lives each year, so please sign this petition and join me in the fight against cancer. With enough signatures, we may be able to persuade the Government to reduce the routine breast screening age to 40, which would be an amazing achievement that would bring us one step closer to eradicating cancer once and for all.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and for your support. Together, we can beat cancer...
