Subject Cross Border U.S. Police Forces to Canadian Law sign now

"The United States wants its police officers to be exempt from Canadian law if they agree to take part in a highly touted cross-border policing initiative," according to a CBC report.

A planned pilot project to permit law officers from the United States to operate on our side of the border (And, admittedly, our officers to act on their sides) includes a request from the U.S. that their officers be exempt from Canadian Law while serving on Canadian soil.

Surely, Law Officers, regardless of who they serve, should be subject to the laws of the country in whose bounds they are operating, and those that they serve.

There are several reasons why it "remains appropriate" for this condition not to come to pass, including:

the fact it is generally the right of sovereign states to have jurisdiction over unlawful acts in its territory; the Canadian and U.S. justice systems are very similar when it comes to use of force by police; the border pact was negotiated on the understanding that the countries' respective legal frameworks would apply.

"Canadians place a high value on sovereignty and police accountability," the briefing note adds.

If this is the case, should this not continue to happen? Should law enforcers, regardless of their nationality, not be held accountable for their actions no matter where they are? It is my opinion that anyone working in Canada, particularly in the field of Law Enforcement should be subject to our laws, as those are, in large part, the laws they will be enforcing.

If you sign this petition, please consider contacting your local Canadian MP as well, letting them know your thoughts on the matter. The louder the voice of the Canadian people, the more likely it is that our idea of justice will be heard.
