Professional Engineers of Ontario vs. Athabasca University (and all online/distance ed providers) sign now

The PEO is preventing all graduates of online/distance education programs from going on to become professional engineers (P.Eng) solely on the basis that the degree was online/distance rather than in a traditional bricks and mortar institution.

In other words, this is a direct shot against ALL students at institutions such as Athabasca University located in Alberta.

It has nothing to do with content, acting in the best interests of the professions in question, or protecting the safety of the general public. This is about one organization that remains ignorant, discriminatory, and unethical.

"Ignorant" because online/distance education is a valid means of learning that is as challenging or even more challenging than learning in a classroom. My profession (software engineering) enables this very technology!

"Discriminatory" because the decision to ignore all online/distance education programs is not based on their merits, only their method of delivery.

"Unethical" because nowhere in the PEO's application process or requirements does it state that an online/distance education is not acceptable.

If other professional organizations in this country acted in the same manner, it would mean that a nursing graduate would be prevented from being certified as a registered nurse, an accounting graduate would be turned away by the organizations that oversee certifications such as a CA, CMA, etc. At some point the nonsense has to stop. A Bachelors degree in this country is a Bachelors degree.

Help strike down ignorance and take a united stand against an organization (PEO) that is seeking to regulate my profession (software development) in Ontario in the same way they regulate other engineering disciplines, and at the same time trying to keep qualified candidates like myself out because they do not acknowledge the value of online/distance education. (The same situation will occur in other provinces as well if left unchallenged.)

There is strength in numbers. Right now one person is easily ignored. With several hundred or several thousand signatures, things will change.

The bottom line is this:

If you invest in a 4-yr degree to become a nurse, you expect to be able to become a nurse after you graduate. You invested in that profession. You trained for that profession. That is what you are. The same thing applies to software developers like myself. Either you are or you are not a software developer. There are no shades of grey.
