North Somerset Council: Turn Our Street Lights Back On! sign now
This Christmas a young soldier from Clevedon sadly lost his life, the road he used to return home in the small hours of Christmas day was pitch black due to government cut backs to save money, this could have easily been avoided. By turning off street lights during the night will only provide for haven for criminals, and is more accidents waiting to happen Quite rightly this will save power, but PUBLIC Safety should be number 1 priority. Criminals will have even more opportunities to commit crime as they will be more confident, and quite rightly, that they will not be identified. Cameras will not be able to identify them accurately and people will not be able to identify criminals or avoid and escape a possible attack. In short, every street which has its lights turned off will turn into a dark alley of which you would usually avoid. People would not feel safe walking through their own residential areas. We don't feel it is absolutely necessary to turn on EVERY light down every street...but at least HALF
