Re: Closure of the visa office in Tehran

Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism,
Honorable Mr. Jason Kenny,

Today we were informed that the Visa Section of the Canadian Embassy in Tehran has been closed and its responsibilities have been transferred to our embassy in Ankara. The purpose of this letter is to voice our concerns regarding this decision that will impact the lives of almost every permanent resident or Canadian citizen with ties to Iran. In this regard:
• The most prominent effect of this decision would be on our parents and grandparents who travel to Canada to visit their children periodically.
• Dealing with Visa applications in Ankara would be extremely challenging for our parents, considering that most of them are retired and may not even afford traveling to Ankara because of the high costs (as they are mostly on a fixed income).
• Additionally, the ability for our parents and grandparents to visit us is extremely important for the well being of us and our children and keeping our family ties.
• The only alternative to a visitor visa application would be the application for sponsorship which takes several years, is costly and most families may not meet the minimum income requirements.
Hereby, the undersigned are requesting that:
• This decision would be reconsidered and/or overturned immediately, or
• Special arrangements would be put in place to facilitate processing of Visa applications for parents and grandparents (e.g. waive the interview, etc.).
Your immediate attention to this matter would be greatly appreciated.
